Rotherham has ambitious plans to transform its town centre. Through the Rotherham Renaissance programme, that journey has begun. The redevelopment of the Central Railway Station acts as another important step forward in the regeneration process.
The project is being led by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) working in partnership with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC), Network Rail, Northern, and Yorkshire Forward.
With nearly half a million people a year using the station, it is vital that we improve this first impression rail users get of our town.
The Renaissance Town Team want Rotherham to be better connected. SYPTE and Northern, the train operating company, want Rotherham rail passengers to have significantly improved facilities and to feel safer and more secure when using the station. Our partners are working together to bring us all of this and now, at the early stages, we want your input, help and support.
The aim is to make the town centre a more attractive, successful and healthy place for people to live, work, visit and invest. The innovative design for the station has the potential to be a landmark, a symbol of the Renaissance ambitions, as well as serving a function.
The new station...

The redeveloped railway station will have:
- A new facilities building including ticket office, passenger lounge, toilet and retail kiosk.
- New lifts and stairs to replace the old ramps, providing better access for passengers.
- CCTV cameras and better lighting to help passengers feel safer and more secure.
- Improved passenger information.
- A new forecourt creating a welcoming environment for pedestrians.
- An improved access road providing better areas for vehicles to turn around, disabled parking, cycle stands and taxi provision.
- Newly refurbished platforms including new canopies.
